![]() ![]() What does James Saxon bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?Īn engaging and personal narrative, with careful hints in his tone of his possibly protective presentation of some of his memories, despite his insistence otherwise. As such some have argued that it is an attack on Hardy himself, leading to the penning of 'Gin and Bitters' as a parody of Maugham's efforts. The life of Thomas Hardy is said to have inspired much of this work, and it explores the balance between a writers fame and worth. What other book might you compare Cakes and Ale to, and why? Otherwise a thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding audible experience. However, this is not for those who don't always pay attention to what they are listening to Maugham enjoys his tangents, and they are not always brief, so near full attention is required. In doing so, "The Black Stranger" is freed from De Camp's imaginary chronology of Conan's exploits and allowed simply to be. Wagner plays an important role in the history of Howard scholarship, because of his efforts to restore the texts of Howard (and several other pulp fantasy authors) to their original form. The 1987 version of "The Black Stranger" was published in anthology called Echoes of Valor, edited by Karl Edward Wagner. Later, in the 1967 collection, Conan the Usurper, De Camp changed the title to "The Treasure of Tranicos" and it's probably under that title that a great many readers first encountered the story. De Camp published a heavily altered version of the story in the March 1953 issue of Fantasy Magazine. We do know that REH rewrote the story for another character, the Caribbean pirate Black Vulmea, though that version of the story didn't see print until the 1970s. ![]() ![]() I don't believe that anyone knows precisely when "The Black Stranger" was written (more knowledgeable Howardists can correct me) or whether it was ever submitted to Weird Tales. ![]() Howard, you need look no further than "The Black Stranger," a Conan yarn that did not see print in its original form until 1987, making it one of the "most recent" Howard stories to see print. The thing that really sets this book apart from anything else I've ever read is that the central mystery can be solved with a logic puzzle grid that's provided in the book itself. The characters explain the solutions to these puzzles in a way that makes sense. And you don't have to take the time to figure out the puzzles on your own if you don't want to. These are fun to do even for people who don't enjoy, or are not good at math. We're talking about visual puzzles, logic puzzles, encoded messages, etc. Before you're turned off by the fact that there's math in this book, I'm not talking about boring arithmetic here. The premise of this book is wonderful: a murder mystery set at a summer math camp! And Van Dolzer brilliantly built math-based puzzles into the narrative in a way that the reader can actually solve them as well while they read along. ![]() 5/22/2023 0 Comments If I Wake by Nikki Moyes![]() ![]() The ending to the book is outstanding in its unexpected turn of events.
